Food
Okonomiyaki
“Osaka is famous for its “konamono,” or flour-based foods. These include takoyaki, kushikatsu, and okonomiyaki. Okonomiyaki is often translated in English as ‘Japanese pizza.’ But, it’s more like a thick, grilled pancake-slash-frittata, with all kinds of ingredients held together by a nagaimo (mountain yam) and wheat flour batter. In terms of toppings, anything goes: shrimp, squid, pork, even cheese. That’s all part of the name - “grilled as you like it,” or “okonomi”!”

Takoyaki
“Takoyaki is one of Osaka’s most well-loved dishes, and if you’re in Osaka it is a must-eat. Depending on which stall you hit up, tenkasu (crispy tempura batter bits) and pickled red ginger might make an appearance. Sometimes they’re slathered with tangy and savoury brown sauce, mayonnaise, and a scattering of bonito flakes. But sometimes, they’re best enjoyed as is.”

Kushikatsu
“It refers to a genre of deep-fried, battered skewered food that you eat dipped in a thin, black, sweet-tangy sauce. Anything can be kushikatsu: meat, vegetables, cheese, and even fruits. It is easy to love and originates from Shinsekai in Osaka. This is quintessential Osakan working-class food. There’s only one rule here - no double-dipping in the sauce is allowed. At all.”
